Governor Uba Sani reverses El-Rufai’s policies on State tertiary institutions, cut school fees by 50%, 30%

Kaduna State governor, Uba Sani has reversed his predecessor’s educational policy as he announced the reduction of in the school fees for indigenes of Kaduna State in higher educational institutions.

The immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai increased schools in the State higher institutions few months to the end of his tenure, thereby, leading to low enrolment and retention of students in the state-owned schools.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, governor Sani acknowledged that the school fees were too high, hence, he was reviewing it.

“Review of current fees regime in Kaduna State tertiary institutions”, the existing fees were too high and had discouraged many students from pursuing or continuing their tertiary education. He said that some students had opted for alternative institutions that offered lower fees.

According to him, the choice of some students opting for higher schools outside Kaduna was due to hike in school fees, a development prompted him to review the fees, saying that his administration was committed to providing free and quality education for every child in Kaduna State from primary to secondary school, as well as expanding access to higher education.

He said that the new fees model was competitive and affordable, and would also enhance the welfare of the students and teachers.
The governor revealed the new fees structure for the state-owned tertiary institutions as follows:

The governor said that the downward review of the fees was also a palliative measure to cushion the effect of the rising cost of living in the country, especially after the removal of petroleum subsidy. He urged the students to take advantage of the opportunity and pursue their academic dreams with diligence and dedication.

The slashing of school fees is a welcome development for many students and parents. It will help to make education more accessible and affordable for everyone. The government’s commitment to providing quality education for all is commendable.
