Fuel subsidy removal: Embrace use of bicycles – Transport director advise Nigerians
Following the hike of petrol as a result of the removal of fuel subsidy in the country, the Director, Road Transport and Mass Transit Administration, Musa Ibrahim has advised Nigerians to embrace the use of bicycles.
Ibrahim gave the advise at a stakeholders sensitisation meeting on Thursday, in Abuja.
The meeting was part of efforts to commemorate World Bicycle Day, marked annually on June 3 through a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution.
According to him, bicycles don’t use petrol and so it is a cheaper means of transportation.
Noting other importance of the use of bicycles, the Director said, it is environmentally friendly compared to other means of road transportation and has less record of road accidents.
He further argued that proponents have equally encouraged the use of bicycles to eradicate poverty, further sustainable development, strengthen education, including physical education, for children and young people, promote health, prevent disease, and facilitate social inclusion.
World Bicycle Day recognises “The uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle as a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transport, fostering environmental stewardship and health, hence the United Nations 2023 World Bicycle Day theme: ‘Riding Together for a Sustainable Future’,” he said.
