Anger trails ex-Attorney General’s N1 billion car gifts, CSO demands probe
Ex-President Muhammadu Buhari’s Attorney General, Abubakar Malami’s car gifts worth N1 billion to his supporters has been trailed with anger as a civil society organisation, Human and Environmental Agenda, has demanded a “thorough, immediate and urgent investigation.
Malami who is the former President’s inlaw gave out car gifts to his supporters as a thank you for standing by him all these years, especially when he attempted to contest for governorship of Kebbi State.
HEDA queried the source of fund and petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission, ICPC to investigate the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice immediately.
In a four-page petition, signed by its Chairman, Olanrewaju Suraju, and which was copied to the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, HEDA said it would amount to non-commitment to anti-corruption fight, if Malam was left out of investigation, particularly where there is a media reports and documentary evidence.
The group alleged that such lack of investigation went “to the root of breakdown of law and order and total disregard for the rule of law while Mr Malami served as Minister of Justice.”
HEDA cited some of the corruption allegations against Malami to include “distribution of 30 car gifts worth over N1,000,000,000 to his supporters in Kebbi State.”
The car gifts, according to the group, include “14 Mercedes Benz, eight Prado SUVs, four Toyota Hilux and four Lexus LX,” adding that “the beneficiaries were social media influencers, executive members of Mr Malami’s foundation and women support groups.”
