2023 poll: Why we reported INEC Chairman, Yakubu to US, UK, other nations – Group
A group operating under the umbrella of Free Nigeria Movement have demanded for the arrest, sack and prosecution of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu over February 25 presidential and parliamentary elections largely believed to be the most fraudulent in Nigeria’s history.
The group that has been protesting for the past 21 days at the Unity Fountain, Abuja, said they have made submissions and have reported Prof. Yakubu to the United States, United Kingdom, United Nations and other International Communities over his compromise and conspiracy, thereby making the country to operate its democracy far away from truth, faith and hope for citizens.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday in Abuja, Convener of Free Nigeria Movement, Moses Paul insisted that INEC Chairman is the epicenter of electoral irregularities, stating further that the presidential election should be cancelled, while all victims of electoral violence should be compensated and the “establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Committee in Lagos and other flashpoints of violence.”
They said they got the international community involved because the appropriate quarters that should entertain their complaints were party of the conspiracy, lamenting that the Prof. Yakubu who should be a father to all citizens irrespective of political and religious bias has turned out to be the worst enemy of Nigerians.
The convener said: “The Prof. should be a father to all Nigerians irrespective of ethnicity, religion, party or social affiliations. However, he has betrayed the trust of many Nigerians who before now hold him in high esteem.
“We therefore call for the boycott of his books, articles, events and all public engagements that celebrate his literary achievements which as of today do not recognize the well-being of the ordinary Nigerian. We need role models and not sell-outs.
“The international community, especially Europe and America, must understand that despite its prescribed neutrality based on diplomatic ethics, will be the most affected if anything happens to Nigeria’s democracy. The weight of human energy that will mob your borders will be as never imagined.
“We frown at the rush by most of the diplomatic community to congratulate INEC’s “President – select”. This action will further embolden the plunderers of the will of Nigerians to hold on to their stolen victory. We therefore call for discretion forthwith.
“Finally, may we restate our commitment to a united, democratic and prosperous Nigeria. We are moved by this commitment to call for answers to the evil of 1st March, 2023, a very traumatic moment in our history. For on that day, the sanctity of what should ordinarily be a free and fair process was buried in the sands of impunity.
“That declaration by Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu remains a dark moment in our history. Little wonder the nation responded with mourning. Our country has been on a perilous journey since then. We call on all Nigerians including the judiciary to rise up and save Nigeria. For saving Nigeria is a collective toil. Let Nigeria win.”
The group insisted that they called for Interim National Government, ING, which some politicians and elements in have twisted it to mean a call for the military takeover. They noted that their position has not changed.
