Kogi 2023: Power shift was Audu’s wish before his untimely death – Tinubu’s ally, Faleke

Ahead of Kogi State governorship primary election slated for Friday this week, the APC Presidential Campaign Council Secretary, Hon. James Abiodun Faleke has appealed to governor Yahaya Bello to allow power move to the Western Senatorial District.

Faleke who is currently representing Ikeja Federal Constituency of Lagos State in the House of Representatives reminded Kogi governor to borrow leaf from the Progressives Governors Forum, which he is a member that ensured presidency moved to the South after the North has had it turn.

He said Bello as the party leader in the State should recall how he emerged as governor in 2015 and do all within his power to allow emergence of governor from Kogi West.
Faleke, who is Tinubu’s ally in a statement on Sunday which was made available to journalists, said, it would be equitable and fair for the west to have their turn.
According to him, Abubakar Audu would have allowed power shift to the Western Senatorial District of Kogi State before his untimely death.
He said: “My position is not premised on any sense of entitlement but on the ideals of equity and fairness which late Abubakar Audu preached before his untimely death.
“The victory of our great party, APC in 2015 especially in Kogi West was the avowed commitment of Late Prince Abubakar Audu to ensure power shifts to other parts of the State.
“I hereby appeal to my brother, His Excellency Yahaya Bello to recall the circumstances of his ascension to power and do all within his sense of reasoning as the leader of the party in the state in ensuring he doesn’t toy with this rare opportunity to be on the positive side of history.
“Just as the Progressive Governors of our party made history before the APC National Convention and those names will remain written in Gold in Nigeria. Posterity is the judge of all humans and may it judge us all positively.
“On the vexed issue of which part of Kogi State should produce the next Governor, it has become imperative for me to let Kogites know my stand irrespective of my decision not to participate in the primaries for reasons I stated earlier.
“For equity, justice and fairness, it is only reasonable to lend my voice to the call by many that our great party, the All Progressives Congress should ensure the candidate for the Governorship election emerged democratically from Kogi West.
“For a heterogeneous State such as Kogi State, giving all parts of the state a sense of belonging is key to peaceful coexistence among the several ethnic groups in the state.
“For more than 16 years, our brothers from the Eastern Senatorial District held sway in Lugard House through Late Prince Abubakar Audu, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris and Captain Idris Wada respectively.
“Kogi Central by the end of the tenure of Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello would have been in the saddle for 8 years, uninterrupted.
“While not discounting the right of those concerned to contest for any office, I believe that the time has come to be just and fair to all.
The clamour for power shift pre-2015 by Kogi West and Kogi Central was to correct the marginalization of the two Districts in the Governorship seat.”
“APC cannot afford to be in opposition in Kogi State and all hands must be on deck to make sure to convincingly win in the November 22, 2023 Governorship.
“There are several states in Nigeria where Governorship positions are rotated amongst the three Senatorial Districts with attendant Peace, unity and progress, why must we be different?
“We must eschew things that could continually engender bitterness, distrust and disunity amongst us especially when deciding on who should be the Chief Executive of this great State.
“What should be of importance is our collective quest and preparedness to engender a united Kogi State for socio-political and economic prosperity.
“The realization of a long-term dream of a State that is secure and prosperous with its diverse demography peacefully coexisting should be paramount in our minds.
“The weird equation of 16:8:0 must be corrected and the right time to start is now with the coming election.
“As a party, we must go into the November 2023 elections with a common sense of purpose devoid of insensitive and unbridled ambition.”

South East: Ebonyi Governor orders arrest of 6 Commissioners, LG Chairman over conract breach

Six Commissioners and a Local Government Council Chairman have been arrested on the order of the Governor of Ebonyi State, Mr Francis Nwifuru over alleged breach of contracts.

The Chairman Afikpo Local Government Area, Mr. Timothy Nwachi, was suspended from office with immediate effect.

Reports said, the Commissioners were accused of contractual breach in the ongoing construction of 140 housing units for the Izzo and Amaze communities, which were displaced by the Ezilo/Ezza Ezilo communal crisis in Ishielu Local Government Area.
The names of embattled Commissioners are: Professor Omari Omaka (Tertiary Education), Victor Chukwu (Environment), Ifeanyi Ogbuewu (Culture and Tourism), Uchenna Igwe (Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters), Moses Ekuma (Health), and Felix Igboke (Project Monitoring).
They were first declared wanted following their disappearance from the State Executive Committee meeting when the matter became known in the media, and the Ebonyi State immediately launched manhunt before they were eventually arrested.
Commenting on the development, Ilang Donatus, Chairman of the State Executive Council Committee on the Izzo and Amaze Housing Project, stated that the action was taken due to the officials’ and contractors’ failure to adhere to contract terms.
Donatus noted that the officials are delaying the housing project, which Governor Nwifuru had planned to commission in celebration of his second anniversary in office.
Donatus emphasised the governor’s frustration over the slow pace of construction, noting that the housing initiative was designed to provide relief to victims of communal crises.
He was quoted as saying, “The governor is not happy over the pace of the work, which ought to have been completed. The government has decided to clamp down on the contractors and commissioners who were mandated to supervise those projects.
“As you can see, our governor is a man with a passionate heart, he likes giving succour, hence the building of those houses for the victims of the communal crisis. He is not happy that the project is delayed and has ordered to arrest of all the commissioners who are supposed to ensure the speedy completion of the housing units.
Adding to the concerns, Mrs. Maria Okohu, Special Assistant to the Governor on Women Mobilization (Ebonyi Central) and a member of the Executive Council Committee, described the situation as an act of sabotage.
She stressed that failure to complete the housing project on schedule undermines the governor’s development agenda for the state.
In response, the state government has vowed to continue its crackdown, warning that further arrests will be made until all implicated commissioners and contractors are held accountable.
Reports also suggest that the Nigerian police have issued invitations to several officials who were not present during the committee’s enforcement visits.
Upon inquiry, Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, stated that he had no knowledge of the arrest or detention of the accused commissioners and the suspended council chairman.
When questioned about whether the Command had invited the officials following the governor’s directive, the police spokesperson responded, “We don’t have any commissioner in our custody. I’m not aware of any invitation and I have asked and I was told we don’t have any commissioner in custody. I will still ask about the invitation but for now, I don’t know anything of such.”
