Naira redesign crisis: APC urge CBN to obey court order

Following the issue surrounding the country’s naira redesign, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele and the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to obey the supreme court order.

The ruling party made the call at a meeting of the APC Governors, the leadership of the National Working Committee with the National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu on Sunday in Abuja.

Change of Name

Recall that More than 9 governors in the party took the Federal Government to Court where they requested that they (FG) be restrained from effecting the February 10 deadline for the expiration of old Naira notes.

But in spite of the Supreme Court ruling restraining the federal government from effecting the deadline, President Muhammadu Buhari in a nationwide broadcast on Thursday last week insisted that the old N500 and N1000 were no longer legal tender.

Speaking at the Meeting, the APC National Chairman said, “A meeting comprising of our APC Governors and the leadership of the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party were summoned and we have had our discussion, at the end of the discussion, we have resolved as follows: the resolutions is without prejudice whatsoever with the case that is lying at the Supreme Court at this point in time.

“This has to do with the issue of currency redesign. We note very seriously that the program and its implementation is causing tremendous difficulties to the people of Nigeria and the national economy.

” We urged the Attorney General of the Federation and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN to respect the supreme Court order of interim injunction which is still subsisting.

“That the meeting is urging his excellency, Mr. President to intervene in resolving the issues that are causing this great difficulties to the people and to the economy,” he said.

In attendance are governors of Kaduna state, Malam Nasiru El-Rufai; Mohammed Bello of Niger, Abdulahi Sule of Nasarawa, Yahaya Bello of Kogi state, Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe state, Bello Matawalle of Zamfara , Mai Mala Buni of Yobe, Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa , Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti, Simon Lalong of Plateau, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi state and the deputy governors of Imo state, Placid Njoku, and Mohammed Manir Yakubu of Katsina state.

Also present were the deputy national chairmen, North, senator Abubakar Kyari; Chief Emma Enekwu, national secretary, senator Iyiola Omisore among others
