NBA Minna branch executive inaugurated
The newly elected chairman of Minna Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Barrister Mohammed Abubakar El-Surur has called on the past leadership of the association, to join hands with his executive members towards building a virile and enviable bar that will be a pride of all.
He made the call in his inaugural speech held at the High Court complex in Minna at the weekend.
He explained that the NBA under his leadership will continue to work with the past leadership of the branch to tap from their reservoir of experience in the affairs of the association and to seek for their indispensable support.
According to him, the NBA leadership under him intend to work collectively on some key areas and strive towards actualising the areas, adding that one of such area was the project of the branch Bar Centre, an official Secretariat which will also house the Bar library for use by all lawyers.
“This is certainly a large and capital intensive project which may not necessarily be fully achievd within the limited two years time frame available to us.
“However, a solid foundation would be laid for our successors to complete” he said.
The chairman stressed the need to use the branch platform to carry out sensitization through the media, on members of the public regarding legal matters that can affect them positively and the larger society which may include finding sponsors for enlightenment programs on legal matters.
He said his leadership will give priority to capacity building for lawyers through lectures and seminars. This, according to him, will be explored with vigor, adding that while not leaving out the young lawyers “for whom special programmes in that regard will equally be given attention”.
We also intend to bring back into focus the mentorship programme that had been existing before now, so that younger lawyers can reap the advantages involve in being mentored” he explained.
Barrister Mohammed Abubakar El-Surur further reiterated his leadership commitment towards creating interactive forums between the bar and the bench with a view to improving the Judicial system.
He noted that none of these goals can be achieved without a pool of ideas, hard work, dedication, and financial resources collectively pulled together by all the members of the branch.
Stating “that the task is not mine alone, neither is it solely that of the executive committee, but a collective responsibility of all of us.
“I therefore count on your support to enable us Succeed as an association”.
Earlier, the Vhief Judge of Niger State, Justice Mohammed Aliyu Mayaki, congratulated the new leadership of the NBA in Minna for the successful conduct of the election.
The Chief Judge who was represented by Justice Mohammed Adishetu Mohammed of the High Court No. 5 told the new executive of the NBA, Minna branch that the Judiciary under the leadership of Justice Mohammed Aliyu Mayaki would partner with the new executive to collectively ensure the speedy administration of Criminal Justice in the state.
He said the bar and the bench in the state have been having a cordial working relationship “and the bench will continue to maintain that cordiality for the over all benefits of the administration of Criminal Justice in the state.
