Currency crisis: El-Rufai begs residents not to protest
Amid tensions in Kaduna which may snowballed into massive protest any moment, governor Nasir El-Rufai has begged residents not to indulge in protest.
Some groups have called for protest in the State over collapse of banknotes swap policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, that has caused scarcity across the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Kaduna, the governor appealed to residents to ignore calls, saying that devious elements are waiting in the wings to exploit the situation.
The statement which was issued by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, said, government has uncovered plans by some individuals and groups to organise massive demonstration in the state.
“Citizens are reminded that care must be taken not to play into the plans of devious elements seeking to create crisis in this crucial period. Citizens are thus advised to ignore these calls for massive protests in the interest of public security,” he said.
El-Rufai said, he had a meeting with
the leadership of the Kaduna State markets and traders’ associations to reiterate appeals for patience and calm.
According to him, legal steps are being taken to address the crisis in order to restore normalcy.
