Suspected IPOB militants attack INEC office, kill police officer in Enugu
Suspected militants of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have attacked the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Enugu community killing a Police Officer.
The attack which took place in Enugu South Local Government Area (LGA) of the state on Sunday night led to the injury of another Police officer on duty.
The militants struck at about 9.12 pm and left after they were repelled by the Police and Army personnel of 82 Division of Nigeria Army.
The attack was confirmed by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye.
Okoye said, there was rapid response to the distress call by security agents, hence, the criminals could only raze the security gatehouse and did not gain entrance before they were repelled.
He said: “The State Commissioner of Police and the REC were personally at the scene immediately they received information about the attack.
“Of the two policemen deployed to protect the facility, one of them lost his life while the other sustained injuries and is receiving treatment.
“The Commission prays for the repose of the soul of the deceased policeman and the speedy recovery of the injured,” INEC said.
