Unknown gunmen raze Police headquarters in Anambra
The Divisional Police Headquarters in Ihiala in Ihiala Local Government Council of Anambra State came under attack on Wednesday by the unknown gunmen.
The Incident caused tension in and around Ihiala communities as the gunmen stormed the station in large numbers shooting sporadically with people living close to the station running helter-skelter.
A source told our correspondent in Awka on Wednesday that Police officers on duty took to their heels before the gunmen who were already shooting as they advanced to the station, saying that the intention behind the attack was not immediately known.
It could also not be confirmed, if the attackers are members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), a militant arm of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Reacting in a statement made available to journalists, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident, saying, “Our operatives in the early hours of today 28/12/2022 engaged some gunmen who attacked Ihiala police divisional headquarters and recovers one abandoned Ak47 rifle. The gunmen escaped the scene due to the superior fire of the police operatives, and no casualty was recorded.
“Unfortunately, the explosives the gunmen threw inside the police station building had already ignited a fire and affected the building.
“Operation is still ongoing in the area, further details shall be communicated.”
