2023: Aggrieved G-5 governors in London may endorse Tinubu at last

The aggrieved give governors in the Peoples Democratic Party fold who are currently in meeting in London may endorse the standard presidential flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Barring any twist, the may finally announce the APC candidate as they are considering several factors, CAPITAL POST has learnt on Tuesday.

Change of Name

The governors which Nyesom Wike of Rivers State is the ring leader are, Engineer Oluseyi Makinde (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifeanyichukwu Ugwuanyi (Enugu).

They were said to have taken their meeting to London from the prying eyes of political actors and journalists for a detailed meeting that would see them taking a unanimous decision in a short time.

CAPITAL POST learnt that the support for Atiku Abubakar who is the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been ruled out, following several meetings and warnings of jettisoning their demand of not removing the National Chairman of PDD as a condition for supporting Atiku.

The aggrieved governors insisted on the resignation of the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu from office and his replacement with a southerner as the only condition to support Atiku’s 2023 bid.

Though, a President of the Southern origin is a strong factor with Bola Tinubu and Peter Obi from the zone, the governors expressed doubt if Obi of the Labour Party could garner votes in line with Constitutional requirement from 25 States, even with their support.

A source said, they may settle for Tinubu who they believed have the capacity to defeat Atiku to avoid being mocked after the election.

The source said: “The London meeting is a wrap-up session on their preferred presidential candidate who will also be part of the campaign in their respective states.

“Before they left, the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, was already out of their equation. Both Atiku’s running mate, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and Governor Emmanuel Udom did not succeed in prevailing on the G-5 to support the PDP candidate.

“They claimed that Okowa and Udom are parts of the problem in PDP because they refused to abide by the decision of the Southern governors on power shift to the South.

They are set to begin campaign on 5th January, 2023 with campaign against Atiku Abubakar, a source said.
