Peter Obi’s campaign DG, Okupe jailed for money laundering
The Campaign Director-General of the
Labour Party which Mr Peter Obi is the Presidential standard flag bearer, Dr Doyin Okupe has been jailed for money laundering.
The Federal High Court in Abuja , which was presided by the Honourable Justice
Ijeoma Ojukwu on Monday found Okupe guilty of contravening sections 16(1)& (2) of the Money Laundering Act.
Okupe was found to have collected cash threshold far above the sum allowed by the money laundering Act which he could not effectively defend in Court. The Court found process abuse when he collected over N200 from the erstwhile National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd).
Delivering judgement in a case that bhas lasted for years, Justice Ijeoma reeled out an option of fine of N500,000 fine on each of the 26 count charge for which he was found guilty.
CAPITAL POST recalled that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, sued the medical doctor turned politician under the Money Laundering Act, and had up to 4:30 pm on Monday to pay the fine option, totalling the sum of N13 million on all the charges he was found guilty or be sent to the Kuje Correctional Centre.
The Judge, however, considered pleas by Okupe’s wife, Omolola, his son, Adesunkanmi and allocutus by the defence lawyer.
Okupe was a former SSA to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.
