1 Police officer, 3 unknown gunmen killed in attack on INEC office in Imo
Unknown gunmen have reportedly attacked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Owerri, Imo State in the South Eastern Nigeria.
During the attack, a Police officer was killed, while three unknown gunmen lost their lives.
Though the name of the Police victim was not revealed, the incident happened
at about 2 a.m. on Monday.
The attack on INEC facilities is said to be the eight time in the last four months with attack on INEC office in Oru West Local Government Area of the same state last week making the attack being two times in a month.
Reports said, the criminals used an Improvised Explosive Device to destroy the building and vehicles parked in the premises.
But some Police personnel stationed in the premises repelled leading to the gunning of three attackers, while one of the Police lost his life.
This has been confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer of Imo State Police Command, Mr Michael Abattam to journalists on Monday.
He also confirmed that an officer was killed during the encounter.
He noted: “As I speak with you, we have arrested two (gunmen). More are still coming because operatives are still combing the area to arrest other fleeing suspects,” says a police spokesperson.”
Items recovered from the hoodlums are
three AK-47 rifles, three pump action rifles, three sticks of dynamite, and four petrol bombs.
