ASURI holds NEC meeting to discuss welfare of members
The Academic Staff Union of Research Institution (ASURI) will hold its periodic National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday (14th September 2022).
The meeting, which will take place at ALGOS Suites & Hotels, Byazhin Road, Kubwa, Abuja, will deliberate on pressure issues affecting the welfare of the Union’s members in the nation’s mandate research institutes scattered in the six geo-political zones.
According to a statement by the Secretary General of ASURI, Theophilus Ndubuaku, those expected to attend the NEC meeting are the National officers, immediate past president, the Secretary General as well as the Chairmen or Secretaries of the various member branches or any person sent by the branch to represent the Chairman or Secretary.
ASURI, which suspended its 16-month strike last April, has been struggling for improved funding of the Research and Development Institutes (RDIs) sector has been advocating the enactment of the National Research and Innovation Council (NRIC) Bill which has passed the Public Hearing stage at the Senate.
As part of its advocacy, the Union formed a coalition with over 30 Civil Society Organisations which, through its ASURI/Civil Society Coalition/Campaign for Research Funding and Strategies for National Transformation, wrote to President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, all members of the National Assembly, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), as well as all Ministers, Ministers of State, Federal Permanent Secretaries and several eminent personalities, including former Presidents and Heads of State.
