$23 million fresh Abacha loot to be returned to Nigeria
The United States government and the Nigerian government on Tuesday entered into an agreement for fresh return of $23 million Abacha loot.
The agreement was signed in the Office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami in Abuja.
While Mr. Malami signed on behalf of the Nigerian government, the U.S Ambassador to Nigeria, Mary Beth Leonard signed on the behalf of the U.S government.
The Attorney General said, the fund would be pushed into the three ongoing projects by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The projects he disclosed, is Abuja – Kaduna Road, 2nd Niger bridge and one other.
CAPITAL POST recalled that since the maximum military ruler died in 1990, Nigeria has been recovering loots running into several billions of hard and local currencies.
In 2020, the US and Jersey also agreed to return over $308 million in confiscated funds to Nigeria.
In 2006, about $723 million in Abacha loot was returned to Nigeria from Switzerland.
