Chaos in Enugu as gunmen kills community leader
The people of Oruku community in Nkanu East Local Government Council of Enugu State were thrown into confusion on Saturday as gunmen assassinated the President-General of the town union, Chief Linus Nwatu.
The assassin’s reportedly broke into his residence in the early hours of Saturday morning shot him dead.
A member of the town union who spoke without disclosing his name for security reasons said, the late Nwatu was a retired Police officer and wondered what was his fault in serving the community.
He lamented the incessant killing of community leaders, saying that Nwatu was killed on the day that the town’s neighborhood watch member, Mr. Dennis Ike (also known as Peace), was fatally killed by gunmen on June 6, 2022, was to be buried.
According to the source late Ike was ambushed and brutally murdered, while he was riding his motorcycle.
Another source who spoke with the newsmen hinted that the thugs might be trying to kill the President General today to prevent the burial of the deceased Ike, which was scheduled for Saturday.
Although security personnel occasionally perform patrol actions in the area, many locals who left the village after a string of attacks and arson have not returned to their houses, and those who remained in Oruku and other towns have continued to live in dread.
Enugu State Police Command was yet to issue an official statement on strings of killings in Kanu East of Enugu State.
