EFCC to partner with group in fight against vote buying, cyber crimes
As part of efforts to sanitise the society and wield it from crimes, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has agreed to partner with the Committee of Youth on Mobilization and Sensitization (CYMS), to orientate Nigerian youths against vote buying, cyber crimes and other systemic corruption degrading the integrity of the nation.
The meeting took place on Tuesday at the EFCC headquarters Abuja when the CYMS delegation led by its Director General, Amb. Obinna Nwaka, paid a courtesy visit to the Commission.
Speaking, the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa commended the organisation for its interest in complementing the EFCC’s effort in ridding the country of corruption.
The Youth, according to him, constitutes a higher proportion of the country’s population and are major determinants of the development of any country and as such should be patriotic citizens.
Bawa, while emphasising the need for sensitisation of youths in the country, said that of the 2,210 cyber crimes related cases the agency have prosecuted(August 5, 2022), 70% of the convicted are youths.
He reiterated that sensitising young people will go a long way in focusing their attention to the right direction as well as redeem the image of the country among comity of nations.
Reacting to the issue of vote buying and the 2023 general elections, the Executive Chairman urged the CYMS to engage volunteers and deploy them to all polling units across the country to monitor and report suspected cases to the commission.
The EFCC boss also granted the request of CYMS in appointing a senior officer from the commission to serve as a liaison official to the organisation.
Also, the Director General, Committee of Youth on Mobilization and Sensitization (CYMS), Comrade Obinna Nwaka, commended the EFCC Executive Chairman, who is also a youth for his achievement in the fight against corruption.
Comrade Obinna recalled how his organisation strove to ensure that Abdulrasheed Bawa’s nomination as the substantive chairman of the EFCC was confirmed by the National Assembly.
He said the CYMS is committed to working with the EFCC in ensuring that the commission achieves its mandate.
The EFCC however presented a complimentary plaque to CYMS in appreciation, encouragement and support to the commission and nation building at large.
Other CYMS Directors during the visit include Tonto Dikeh; Socials and Empowerment, Kelechi Ugwumba; Contacts and Mobilization, Baiyee Aisha; Finance, Adeyemi Qudus; Logistics, Mallam Shamsudeen Haruna; Planning and Strategy, Taiye Akintola, Admin Officer and some CYMS volunteers.
