2023 presidency: Fear of PDP’s Atiku force me to endorse Lawan over Tinubu – Adamu reveals
The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu said, his choice and endorsement of Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan over Ahmed Bola Tinubu was due to PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar who comes from the North East.
Adamu had announced Lawan as the APC presidential candidate, but was resisted by the governors, who insisted that election be conducted.
Adamu’s announcement preceded rumours that Lawan was his choice.
The APC governors who resisted Adamu insisted that the party’s presidential candidate must come from the South, given that the incumbent, in person of President Muhammadu Buhari comes from the North West.
In the primary which held at Eagle Square, Abuja, Bola Tinubu eventually won the ticket.
“It is true that after consultations at the appropriate and different levels of the party, we had reasons to believe that he (Lawan) was the best at the time.
“And that was motivated partially by the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to field former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
“And they have been upbeat that the position of the president must go to the South. We also know, as a matter of fact, that the PDP is predominantly entrenched in the South East, and to some extent, South South”.
