BREAKING: Security Chiefs, Senate leadership in ‘panic’ meeting

At the backdrop of terrorists’ presence in Abuja, seat of the Nigerian government, the leadership of the ninth Senate and heads of all Security agencies are currently in ‘panic’ meeting.

The meeting which started at exactly 3pm on Wednesday was well attended by security Chiefs with the retinue of aides.

Change of Name

Senate President, Dr Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan in his opening remark told them clearly that the magnitude of insecurity has assumed a frightening dimension.

Lawan said, there’s nothing to show that the huge investments by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was yielding any positive result, given that the spate of attacks was so recurrent and dangerous in Abuja as well.

Lawan’s remark was at the backdrop of the terrorists’ siege to the Federal Capital Territory that led to the killing of a lieutenant and a captain of presidential guards and subsequent attacks in past weeks.

The meeting was at the instance of the Senate leadership despite being on a long vacation which the lawmakers are due to return to session on September, 20.

“The current situation is now frightening as there is now nowhere to go and nowhere to hide as the FCT, the seat of Government is now under siege.

“The security concerns has crippled the economy and key sectors, notably Agriculture, describing it as unfortunate.”

Lawan said, there was need for security agents to look into ungoverned spaces in rural king, adding that it has become so bad that Nigeria is no longer attractive to foreign direct investment.

He attributed the low national revenue to crude oil theft and dwindling revenue are key areas of concern to Nigerians, but expectations of Nigerians have been dashed as there was no drastic action for immediate improvement in the security situation.

In his short reaction before they went into close-door meeting, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor said, issues of National Security must be seen from a collective perspective.

“A lot has happened, a lot is being done to improve the security situation of the country.”
