The Federal government of Nigeria on Wednesday approved the lease of three aircraft to commence its proposed national career called Nigeria Air

According to a statement by the Special Assistant on Public Affairs to the Minister of Aviation, Dr James Odaudu in Abuja, he said, the national carrier would begin operations with domestic routes.

Change of Name

The statement quoted the Minister of Aviation Senator Hadi Sirika to have told journalists in an interview that the aircraft would be procured from Airbus and Boeing.

The development followed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting’s decision for the country to commence its own air operations which was presided by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Federal government’s decision to commence its own national carrier is despite the high cost of aviation fuel also known as jet A1.

Sirika announced that the airline would begin with domestic routes, then expands to regional and intercontinental routes. He was not specific with the actual date for the take-off of the airline operations.

On the likely date for the commencement of operations Sirika said “We will announce commencement soon,”
