Flood: NiMET issues red alert to Northeast, Southwest States
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has warned that flood would take place in some Northeast and Southwest States.
The agency identified Taraba and some parts of Southwest States as flood prone, while it advised residents of the affected areas to get prepared as a result of rainfall.
Director General of NiMET, Prof. Mansur Matazu disclosed this stating that people in the expected flood prone areas should not be taken by surprise.
In Lagos, torrential downpour had cause flood across the State which resulted deaths and destruction of properties, adding that NiMET recorded 95% accuracy of its predictions for the past 15 years.
According to him, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) gave the agency a pass mark for their prediction.
The NiMet boss lamented that some states and local governments were not adhering to early warnings issued by the federal government by aligning to activities at the national level aimed at mitigating the effect of floods.
He also stressed the need for MDAs to take all the warnings from NiMet to mitigate the impact of flooding.
