Reps ask NEMA, Power ministry, others to immediately address flood victims in Kebbi State

The House of Representatives has called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development as well as Great Green Wall to immediately address the challenges of the victims of storm and flood in Jega and Gwandu Local Government Areas of Kebbi State.

The House’s resolution was sequel to the motion of urgent public importance by Hon. Muhammad Umar Jega.

Change of Name

Hon. Jega who represents Aliero/Gwandu/Jega Federal Constituency of Kebbi State and Chairman, House Committees on IDPs, Migrants, and Refugees said the storm and flood left devastating effects on his people hence the need for government’s intervention.

Jega also told journalists in an interview that he has made his personal efforts including providing some relief materials to assist the victims.

Moving the motion on an urgent need to attend to the storm/flood victims in Jega and Gwandu Local Government Areas, Jega lamented on the damages caused by the disaster.

“The House Notes
That on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th June, 2022 four people lost their lives while several others sustained various degree of injuries as a result of storm and flood that ravaged Jega town, Anguwar Abdulraziku and Mazagoma villages in Jega and Gwandu town.

“Concerned that several houses collapsed, and electrical installations got damaged as a result of the storm and flood, also several farm lands were washed away.

“Aware that the flood has resulted into untold pain and hardship on the affected communities in Jega and Gwandu Local Government Areas.

“Many communities in these local government areas are living in total darkness due to the destroyed electrical installations

“The displaced persons are now stranded and require urgent government assistance.”

Following the motion, the House resolved to observe one minute silence in honour of the diseased;

The House also urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to take necessary actions by providing relief materials to the victims of this flood.

The House also enjoined the Ministry of Power in collaboration with Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company to provide transformers and other electrical installations to the affected communities in Jega and Gwandu Local Government Areas, while
the Federal Ministry of Environment and Great Green Wall who are saddled with the responsibility of flood and erosion control to come to their aid.

The House mandated the Committees on NEMA; Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management as well as Committee on Power to ensure its compliance.

The committees have four weeks to report back to the House for further Legislative actions.
