Protest rocks Abuja over Area Councils tenure elongation

The Minister on Thursday in a statement to CAPITAL POST announced suspension of inauguration which was expected to take place on Friday, 20th May, 2022, but was cancelled due to Court judgement which said the amended Electoral Act stipulates a four year of office for the FCT Area Council Chairmen and their Councillors.
Following the development, residents of FCT were on Gwagwalada-Lokoja highway protesting setting bonfire on the road preventing human and vehicular movement on Friday.
Some motorist’s and passengers who were caught up in the protest lamenting passing through the expressway as the protest caused gridlock.
Our correspondent also reports that
some protesters have also blocked the Minister’s office located at Area 11 to protest against the judgement of a Federal High court which granted a one-year tenure extension to the incumbent six Area Council Chairmen.
The protesters are insisting that it was a cavalier judgement that should not be implemented, given that the incumbent Chairmen and Councillors took an oath of office to spend three years.
