UK gov’t denies designating IPOB a terrorist group
The British High Commission in Nigeria has reacted to several media reports that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has been proscribed in the United Kingdom, saying the group has never been proscribed or.classified as a terrorist organisation.
The former colonial masters said, neither IPO nor the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and other Pro-Biafran groups have been placed on the country’s terror list as claimed.
But the UK clarified that any member of these groups that got involved in violence would be denied entry or as
asylum in the United Kingdom.
In a statement by the High Commission on Saturday said: “We are aware of inaccurate reporting circulating in the media and online that the UK Government has added the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to the UK’s list of terrorist groups or organisations banned under UK law.”
“These reports are untrue. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is not a proscribed organisation in the UK,” a statement by the British High Commission on Friday evening read.
The High Commission said that media claim was linked to the 13th April 2022 publication by the United Kingdom
Government of a revised Country Policy and Information note (CPIN) on separatist groups in SE Nigeria, including the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).”
