Zulum solicits UN Secretary General’s support on recharging Lake Chad, resettlement of IDPs, infrastructure

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has called on the United Nations (UN) to champion and advocate the recharging of the Lake Chad Basin for human activities as there is much potentials in the region to bring back livelihood support to the residents.

He also appealed to the UN to support the resettled IDPs with livelihood support to enable them resume full human activities of farming, fishing and livestock activities.

Zulum further requested the UN Secretary General to come to the aid of the state government to address the daunting challenges of devastating destruction of public and private propriety, especially schools, hospitals, offices, houses and farmlands where landmines are still found in some resettled area and access roads linking some of the communities.

He also requested he UN to assist and support the CJTF whose complimentary efforts of providing security to the people in collaboration with the Nigerian security agencies.

The governor earlier urged the UN Secretary General to facilitate efforts and plans by the state government in the rebuilding process as part of the post insurgency transformation agenda, where the insurgency had caused large scale property destruction and killing of human beings and animals of the people apart from the displacement of over two million people who were rendered homeless and exposing them to severe poverty, hunger and starvation as many could not have access to their farmlands and business activities.

He however appreciated the support and assistance of the humanitarian organizations in the resettlement of the IDPs, stressing that, uptill now, they are IDPs in some designated camps and refugee camps outside the state and the county who are being repatriated that need humanitarian support.

The governor commended the efforts and sacrifices of the security agents including the vigilante CJTF and hunters in the fight against the terrorists.

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres who was in Maiduguri on a ore day State working visit visited some camps Where he interacted with some IDPs at Gubio IDPs camp and interacted also with some of the terrorists when he visited the Boko Haram terrorists Rehabilitation Center at Bulumkutu behind Umaru Shehu Hospital Maiduguri.

The United Nations Secretary-General , Mr. Antonio Guterres arrived Maiduguri, the Borno state capital this afternoon as part of his one day official visit to Nigeria to assess the devastating level of destruction of property and killings where the Boko Haram terrorists displaced over two million people, destroyed schools, hospitals, houses and offices.
