It was reported that no fewer than four hundred and fifty thatch and leather tents were destroyed by a fire disaster at Government Girls Secondary School (GGSS) designated IDPs Camp in Mafa town, the capital of Mafa Local Government Council of Borno State.
It was gathered that the inferno also destroyed the IDPs property including foodstuffs and other valuable items worth millions of naira.
A statement issued by the Mafa LGC Information Unit of the Local Government Council said, no life was lost or injured during the fire disaster.
It added that while the Chairman of the IDPs Camp, Ahmodu Abatcha was conducting and briefing the Chairman of Mafa LGC, Abatcha Kawu explained that the fire started around 3:40 pm in the afternoon and the community immediately mobilize security agents who successfully assisted in putting off the fire.
The statement further explained that the Chairman Abatcha Kawu had already sympathized with the victims and appealed to them to consider what happened to him as an act of God while assuring them that the LGC will assist them.
According to the statement, the Chairman also promised to report the incident to the Govenrorr for immediate intervention while the Borno State House of Assembly (BOSHA) member presenting Mafa LGC State Constituency, Hon. Baba Ali Modu expressed shock and deep sadness over the fire disaster.
The House member also expressed his dismay on the incessant fire disaster recently being experienced in most of the IDPs Camps in the Borno central and Borno north while appealing to the IDPs Camps management to be more vigilant and set up a committee that would continue sensitize the people on the consequences of careless use of fire this winter period and ensure proper means and ways of using fire.
