Remove governor’s assent to land titles in Land Use Act to stop abuse – Adedoyin
The Nigerian National Assembly has been appealed to amend the Land Use Act 1976 and remove State governor’s assent to land titles in order to stop their abuse.
A Chartered land expert, Mr Adedayo Adedoyin stated this while speaking with newsmen in Lagos on Tuesday, saying that, “as a matter of urgency; they reconsider expunging the power given to State Governors in assenting to title deeds before they become legal documents.”
The land expert argued that governors have abused the privilege over the years because of too much powers vested in them including the power to assent to land titles which they have used to witch-hunt perceived political enemies.
He said: “The power ascribed to the State Governors on matters affecting land titles has turned most of these Governors into mini gods and the earlier this power is whittled down or completely expunged from the act, perceived political opponents would continue to be at the mercy of these Governors. It is about time, something was done to tinker with this provision in the act.”
He said this power if reduced, would allow for a robust dispensation of application title deeds on land in the states.
