Female genital Mutilation: Reps seek halt to inhuman practice.
The House of Representatives has called on the Minister of Women Affairs and the National Orientation Agency to organize nationwide sensitization programmes to discourage the practice of female genital mutilation.
This was sequel to a motion brought by Ganiyu Johnson before his colleagues as he called on them to support the move to put an end to the barbaric practice amongst various tribes in the country.
He said the United Nations had declared February 6th every year as an International Day for the eradication of female genital mutilation to drum support for the protection for the physical and mental health of women and the girl child.
The House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values are to ensure compliance and report back in four weeks for future legislative action.
