Residents of five communities in Zamfara State have deserted their communities due to the frequent attacks by the rampaging bandits.
This followed a fresh attack that led to the abduction of 35 residents and the killing of 10 others in Gusau villages of Zamfara State.
The villagers deserted their homes after signing a peace deal and payment of N15 million with bandits to allow them rest, but surprisingly, they came for fresh attack, hence, the villagers have left in their hundreds.
A resident disclosed: “We have deserted our homes after signing a peace deal to pay N15 million to the bandits.
“The villages that have paid the levy sum of N15 million are Karazau Dantsauni, Gidan-Tsamiya, Gurgurawa, Kwalaye and Gudan-kaura all in Gusau Local Government Council of Zamfara State.”
“We struggle to pay the amount, but terrorists came again and kidnapped 35 persons including women and children who stayed behind, while 10 people were murdered in cold blood
The villagers said they sold some of their belongings, including their farms, to raise the N15 million levy. But to their dismay, the bandits are still asking for more money for their protection.
Zamfara State Police Command speaking through its PPRO, Mohammed Shehu denied knowledge of N15 million payment to bandits, saying there was no official complaint to that effect.
He also said that Ayuba Elkana, the Commissioner of Police in the state, has deployed police officers, in collaboration with other security agents, to the area.
