Electoral Amendment Act: Senators working to override Buhari, gathering signatures – Rivers Senator
Following the withholding of presidential assent to the 2021 Electoral Amendment Act, by President Muhammadu Buhari, Senators have in ernest gathering signatures to override his veto.
Senator representing Rivers East Senatorial district, Thompson Sekibo, and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party revealed on Tuesday after plenary.
Speaking at an interview, the lawmaker who wasn’t comfortable with the unassented Electoral Amendment bill, believed that many other Senators were also not happy, said as at the time of the interview, about 73 signatures have been gathered.
The upper legislative Chamber has 109 sitting Senators.
“We have compiled 73 signatures and out of 109 of us, we need two-third majority to override President Buhari.
Once, the President is over ridden, it becomes a law.
CAPITAL POST on Monday reported that President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the National Assembly to notify them of declining his assent to the Electoral Amendment bill, citing several issues.
The letter was acknowledged on Tuesday, and was read by the Senate President, Dr Ahmad Ibrahim Lawn.
President Buhari pointed out in his letter that the bill was thoroughly reviewed and had been advised by relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of Government against signing the bill.
