Rape victim’s father remanded for collecting N800,0000 from rapist as settlement
Father of a rape victim, Collins Azunna has been remanded in prison by a Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt for collecting the sum of N800,000 from a rapist, after his daughter, Wigoh Enuolara was raped.
The rape victim is 12 years old.
Trouble started when the defence lawyer, Edwin Woka revealed in Court that his accused client was charged to Court because he refused to be extorted further by the rape victim’s father after he was made to pay the sum of N800,000.
The defence lawyer, stated this when the rapist was arraigned in Court in Port Hacourt.
Explaining how the sum of N800,000 was collected, Counsel to the complainant, Wigoh Enuolara toldthe Magistrate that an Investigation Police Officer, IPO, in the case, Rita of Eleme Police Division in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State where the offence was committed pressured and deceived the complainant to take the said amount of money.
Chief Magistrate F N Amanze, after going through the case files of the accused and nominal complainant at Eleme Police Division and State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, noted that there is a document showing that the father of the victim collected money and withdrew the case at the Eleme Police Division.
The Chief Magistrate subsequently ordered the accused Collins Azunna and the father of the victim be remanded at Port Harcourt Correctional Centre and adjourned till January 13, 2022, for proper arraignment.
