It was uncontrollable tears at the journalist, Tordue Salem’s family compound in the Gaado community of Mbayion in Gboko Local Government Council of Benue as the remains of the Vanguard reporter was laid to rest on Saturday.

Late Tordue Salem was declared missing on 13th October, 2021 after he closed from work until reports filtered in after a month that his corpse was deposited at Wuse General hospital morgue in Abuja on November 10, 2021, amidst controversies.

Change of Name

Before then, there was apprehension that led to protest by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council to the headquarters of the Nigeria Police demanding intervention of security agents to rescue him.

Shockingly, someone claimed to have knocked him down while crossing road, but said he ran to report himself at a Police station that he has killed somebody.

A claim that triggered wild reactions over the likelihood of falsehood, given that it happened after barely a month that the Journalist disappeared.

He was buried on Saturday amid tears from loved ones at a well-attended ceremony by people from all walks of life including a former First Lady of Benue State, Mrs Regina Akume.

Journalists from Benue, led by their association’s President, Mr Emmanuel Anule reacted saying the association has lost a committed member whose contribution will be difficult to fill in the nearest future.

Also, a member of the House of Representatives for Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency, Dr John Dyegh, who represented the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, described the death of Salem as sad and unfortunate.

Dyegh restated the lower legislative Chambers resolve to stop at nothing to unravel the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased, a reporter with Vanguard newspapers was until his death covered legislative activities of the Federal House of Representatives.
