The Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) has began the recovery of destroyed hard shoulders at the Hawan Kigbo Road in Plateau to ease traffic during the festive period.

Unit Commander, FRSC Hawan Kigbo Unit Command, Mr Patrick Ogbu while flagging off the repairs stated that the measure became necessary to reduce road crashes and congestion.

“In efforts to ensuring gridlock and yuletide crash free season, the Tom Gangare community, Hawan Kigbo, Riyom LGA in collaboration with the FRSC Hawan Kigbo Unit Command embarked on this community self-help project.

“This is with the view to recovering the dilapidated hard shoulders of the road and removing anything likely to constitute obstruction to traffic during the Yuletide period and beyond,” he said.

Ogbu explained that the present condition of the road poses challenge to commuters as the hard shoulders had already given way.

He said trucks and articulated vehicles park to rest and cool off their vehicles on the road, taking up part of the road due to absence of the hard shoulders, thereby reducing the existing narrow road.

He added that the Hawan Kigbo being the major road connecting to the northeast and parts of the northwest was known to be a crash prone area which should not be ignored.

Ogbu who said the portion that required immediate attention spans 1,170 metres appealed to the government and individuals to support the course by donating gravels and other materials for the repairs.

He said members of the community and FRSC staff were ready to do the manual labour adding that it would require 240 tipper loads of gravel to recover the portion.

Executive Chairman, Riyom LGA Hon. Mafeng Golson appreciated the FRSC for always being the first respondent to road traffic crashes and for the road project.

Gwolson said it would go a long way in reducing gridlock along the road as well as reduce risk of having vehicles crashing into stationary or moving trucks.

He said the temporary measures taken were laudable adding that there were plans on ground to establish a park for trucks and articulated vehicles.
