2023: Trouble for Tinubu as APC leaders rejects his plan to succeed Buhari on health grounds
Ahead of 2023 presidential election, fresh trouble may be looming in the camp of the National leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu as some party Chieftains didn’t hide their rejection of him to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.
Those who spoke their minds said he was too frail and medically unfit to cope with rigours of the office of the President.
A stalwart of APC in Lafia, Nasarawa State, Alhaji Isah Danladi told newsmen that he “represents a recycling process that has left the country in ruins.”
“Tinubu is no better than Buhari. In societies with conscience, his type should be concerned with leaving a good legacy as a statesman who contributed in stabilizing our democracy, but not for him to contest.
They were reacting at the backdrop of the inauguration of the Steering Committee of Tinubu Support Group (TSG) from the 36 States of the Federation including the FCT at his campaign office at No 2, Kainji Crescent, Maitama, Abuja on Saturday.
Facilitator of the group, Hon. James Abiodun Faleke canvassed support for Tinubu, stating that he is the architect of modern Lagos.
He also called on Tinubu to openly declare his intention to contest the 2023 presidency to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari
He said: “on behalf of the millions of supporters of Tinubu Support Group, we are calling on our National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to formally announce his presidential aspiration.”
Faleke hinged his assertion that Tinubu remains popular even after leaving office seven years ago and continues to be a central figure in Nigerian politics.
The lawmaker who is the House Committee Chairman on Finance noted that APC was lucky to have a person of Tinubu’s towering political status.
The development was however argued differently by some party chieftains who insisted that the party has better options given that Tinubu recently returned from London where he underwent a knee surgery.
Another party stalwart, Dr Garus Gololo said “these people are jokers. You mean to say that a group of persons will gather themselves and in clear conscience seek to encourage an obviously weak and tired fellow to run for the presidency.
Haba! Are we that unserious in this country. This is a man that just returned from the sick bed. And he is still nursing whatever ailment befell him.”
Gololo opined “that making Tinubu Nigeria’s president is same as given Buhari another term in office. Both men are sick and weak.”
“How many times has Buhari left the country on medicals abroad? More than five times. And we want to bring another like him,” he added.
This is as he called on the APC leadership to give the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo and the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, to opportunity to lead the nation; adding that both men have proven track record of performance and are strong enough to get the job done.”
Dr Gololo equally disclosed the readiness of some party members to move to other political parties “if APC as much as contemplates giving Tinubu the opportunity to vie for the presidency.”
An APC youth leader in Kaduna State, Mallam Abdulazeez Ayinfa in his views noted that the Tinubu presidency is like nailing the coffin of APC.
