Gunmen raids Police Division, kills Policeman, set vehicles ablaze in Ebonyi

Divisional Police headquarters in Ohaukwu, headquarters of Ohaukwu Local Government Council of Ebonyi on Sunday night came under heavy attack by gunmen.

A Police Sergeant was feared killed, while a section of the Station’s building, cars and other valuables were were ablaze.

The hoodlums were said to have used petrol bombs and dynamites in attacking the Station.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the Stats, DSP Loveth Odah and the Ohaukwu Local government council Chairman, Barrister Clement Odah, confirmed the incident to journalists in Abakaliki.

DSP Odah explained that the gunmen were repelled by officers, but a Police Sergeant who sustained gun shot wounds died at Alex Ekwueme Teaching Hospital,. Abakaliki where he was rushed for medical attention.

According to him, Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, CP Aliyu Garba was on the spot assessment on Monday morning.

He said, “At about 23.50 hours, a yet to be identified gunmen came into Ohaukwu Police Divisional headquarters, to attack the station and men on duty, but they were immediately repelled and in the process, one policeman, a sergeant sustained a gunshot injuries and was rushed to Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital where he was confirmed dead this morning.

“They threw petrol bomb into the station and unfortunately it got one of the patrol vehicle and an exhibit vehicle parked in the station.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Aliyu Garba has visited the area for on-the-spot assessment. He also met with the community leaders.

“As you know, this is the first time we are experiencing this and the non-state actors such as the vigilance groups and hunters have been of great assistance to the police in the council area.
