ISWAP suffered defeat, many killed as leader badly injured in Gamdu gun battle with soldiers
Fighters of Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) suffered major defeat in gun battle with the Nigerian soldiers in Gamdu community of Borno State on Wednesday.
Several fighters of ISWAP that operates in the fringes of Lake Chad were reportedly killed with one of their popular commander and Deputy leader in Sambisa, Modou Okocha seriously injured in the encounter.
Gamdu is in Borno State, Northwestern Nigeria.
Several reports indicated that the fighters attempted to ambush the troops motorcade before the group forces engaged them with airstrikes to support the attack.
ISWAP commanders, Yaya Ebraheem, Baba Chattimari and Abu Adam Oubaida led the assault on the convoy and a Forward Operating Base (FOB).
An intelligence officer within the army confirmed that the Sambisa Deputy leader, Modou Bacheer Okocha was wounded.
The source said troops were on their way from Damaturu in Yobe State to Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, when they were alerted of imminent attack midway into the journey.
In readiness for face the attack, troops made a detour to reinforce the base after sending signals to the Air Force for airiel support.
As they passed through Ngamdu, a border town between Borno and Yobe States, the terrorists opened fire but were defeated.
Fighter jets began pounding ISWAP locations and gun trucks killed many of them.
However, reports said four soldiers were killed in the battle.
