Senators, others flee as popular transport leader’s gunmen invade APC congress venue in Abeokuta

The ongoing All Progressives Congress (APC) State congress in Abeokuta was on Saturday disrupted as a popular transport leader’s gunmen allegedly invaded the congress shooting sporadically.

The gunmen numbering about ten invaded the venue amid parallel congress by a faction of Senator Ibikunle Amosun and a faction loyal to the governor of Ogun State, thereby making both factions scampering for safety.

Notable men who were already at the Ake Palace Ground, venue of the Congress in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital are Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite; the Senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District, Tolu Odebiyi and the governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM in the 2019 election in the State, Adekunle Akinlade, Senator Ibikunle Amosun were amongst the dignitaries who were already at the venue before the.gunmen stormed the venue.

Senators and other party stalwarts escaped unhurt but many others were unlucky as they sustained different degrees of injuries due to gunshot.

It was alledged by one of the escapee that he saw the Ogun State Chairman of Road Transport . Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Titilayo Akibu personally leading the invasion.

According to his explanation to newsmen after the incident, he.said among the unmasked thugs was one he could identified as Habib Makai.

Several vehicles parked in front of the Palace were destroyed while men of the Ogun State Police Command deployed to the venue looked away.

Gunmen reportedly demanded for the whereabout of the former Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Union, Akeem Adeosun popularly called Jango, who was earlier sighted at the congress ground, but had left the venue unknowingly to anyone.

Angered by the development, party members descended on the police officers at the venue and attempted chasing them away.
