The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has tasked the Department of Security Services (DSS) to commence investigation of Nigeria’s Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Senator George Akume.
Akume was a former two term governor of Benue State, but has been suspected in the endless killing and rising acts of terrorism in Benue State.
The National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan in a statement he issued to media houses said Akume’s call for declaration of State of emergency on Monday confirmed his role in making Benue State ungovernable, so that the governor would be removed to pave way for his allies.
The party described attack on governor Samuel Ortom as an unforgiveable assault on Benue people, adding that Akume’s call for the State of emergency wasn’t only thoughtless but reckless and reprehensible.
The statement said: “The party notes that the call exposes Akume’s desperation to destabilize the state having become frustrated that despite the travails they face, the people of Benue had remained united and refused to break their ranks under Governor Ortom.
”Indeed, such sinister call can only come from an individual who is desperate to perpetuate and draw political capital from the bloodletting in the state, as means to further subjugate and erode the constitutionally guaranteed rights of the Benue people.”
“The PDP invites Nigerians to note that despite the killings, bloodletting and wanton destruction of property, in which eminent citizens of the state have lost their lives, Senator Akume, a former governor of the state, elected Senator and now a minister of the Federal Republic, has never condemned the killings or sought any form of redress or succour for the people.”
