Al-Makura: The APC’s healing balm……
The All Progressive Congress, APC, an amalgam of six opposition political parties was formed in 2013 and clinched power at its very first outing in 2015 by defeating the ruling Peoples Democratic party, PDP.
The success of the party at the presidential polls was not unexpected because the thrust of its campaign resonated well with the electorates and indeed, Nigeria.
The party gained more political millage in its second leg of 2019 general elections when it won more states to end the sixteen years of political dominance of the PDP.
But rather than consolidate on its strength to provide the needed supportive ambience for the government in office, the APC is today is challenged by some avoidable internal squabbles.
Some of the issues threatening its cohesion and perhaps the future of the party are sundry internal issues which include but not limited to indicipline litigations, lost of some key elections and the unseen face of 2023.
This development has kept the party sneezing with the attendant growing lost of confidence amongst the rank and file of its members.
It will therefore be safe to risk a guess that poor leadership to properly guard its success story is at the very root of the party’s raging tension.
As the APC prepares for its national convention to elect new leaders,, it behoves on all stakeholders to do the needful by electing only candidates who embodied the three critical Cs of COMPETENCE, CAPACITY AND CHARACTER in modern leadership to guide the party to safety.
One clear figure in the race for the position of National chairman is His Excellency Dist. Senator Tanko Almakura, the immediate past Governor of Nassarawa state.
Popularly referred to as the father of new Nassarawa state in North Central Nigeria, Senator Almakura has a towering pedigree in politics, bussiness and Development.
A passionate, strategic and amiable gentleman, Senator Almakura cut his teeth of service since his student days at Ahmadu Bello university in the mid seventies where he was fully part of the students struggle as Assistant Secretary general of National Union of Nigeria students, NUNS.
His student union experience was carefully nurtured through the year by young Tanko Almakura and became the foundation of his shining political journey.
He developed his leadership skills through various strategic leadership positions he held at local, State and National levels among which are member of the 1978 constituent Assembly that drafted the 1979 constitution, National youth leader of the ruling National Party of Nigeria, NPN, Secretary General of the National Republican Convention in the old plateau state, President Gwandara development association and Secretary General of All clubs that he was members.
Having gathered these robust field experiences over the years, Tanko Almakura perhaps reckoned that his days in partisan politics was just a matter of time.
Before he threw his cap into the ring, he created the “Almakura movement” a multi tribal platform to engage and mobilise all the tribes in state as one family, a project that truly underscores his philosophy in life that “if we must grow and achieve, we are better and stronger together.”
This was the vehicle and political master stroke that created the Tanko Almakura’s factor which he easily leveraged on to defeat the incumbent governor and orphaned the PDP in Nassawa state.
Senator Tanko Almakura’s top notch political craft is therefore not by accident but a product of deliberate and careful understanding of the vagaries of Politics as a tool to offer selfless service and impact humanity.
Little wonder he recorded huge success stories in his key areas of interest just as he brailed the trail in business, politics and governance.
As Governor between 2011 through 2019, he sparked an infrastructure revolution that changed the face of Nassarawa state through massive provision of facilities associated with city life in the keys sectors of Health, Education, Agriculture, Civil service and general administration.
A practical politician and great teacher that he is,, Senator Tanko Almakura’s verified leadership, inclusive and consensus building sagacity and seamless grassroots operator are the rich credentials and the critical healing balm that he will bring to the table to breathe healing in the APC if elected as National chairman.
