The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), the opposition political parties in Nigeria has called on the National Assembly to reconvene quickly to check what they termed “reckless conduct of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government in fight against the coronavirus.”

Reacting to the death and burial of the former Chief of Staff to the President,  Abba Kyari, the CUPP’s spokesman,  Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere lamented how the measures as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) in curtailing the spread of coronavirus was brazenly flouted thereby endangering the lives of Nigerians.

Change of Name

CUPP was deeply concerned that government agents,  particularly the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 have turned the assignment into conduit pipe for looting the nation’s resources, saying that lawmakers should reconvene to legislative on how the fight against the pandemic is conducted.

The statement which was made available to CAPITAL POST on Saturday in Abuja said:

“We urge National Assembly to reconvene and start doing their work if they have political will as this  is turning into a looting pipe for politicians and a huge joke.

Today, they fly unchecked oil workers to Rivers without respect to the safety measures of the
state, the Aviation Minister issues reckless flight permits, people are now allowed to treat at private hospitals, corpses are moved around against WHO protocols and health measures.

Lockdown is violated by those who made the law.   This government is still playing politics with this fight.

We urge state indigenes to pressure their governors to without recourse
to any interest lockdown their states to avoid FG reckless action affecting them including arresting and prosecuting anybody who violates their regulations.

“At this moment we look up to the states to show leadership since the centre is now reckless and irresponsible.

“Nigerians will hold President Muhammadu Buhari personally responsible if the situation in Abuja deteriorates and the number spikes.”
