National Consultant for the Employment, Labour and Market Analysis (ELMA) Mr Samuel Okwa has advised Plateau Government to empower the youth through vocational trainings

  • Okwa gave the advice in a workshop on “Employment and Labour Market Analysis Validation” for stakeholders in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and Employment Sectors on Wednesday in Jos.

The workshop was organised by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) under the project Skills Development for Youth Employment (SKYE), in collaboration with GFA Consulting Group

The SKYE project is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ)

Okwa also urged government to invest heavily on vocational skills research and encourage creative industries so as to engage young talented youth in meaningful ventures.

He advised the government to take advantage of its huge tourism potentials and arable land by investing in tourism and agriculture so as providing the necessary for young people to venture into it.

“Vocational training and skill acquisition is the way to go; it is the fastest way to move any society out of poverty. From the survey we conducted, we discovered that Plateau has all it takes to prosper, yet it is not making much progress.

“So, I wish to advice the government to invest in vocational training for youth. When youth are empowered with meaningful skills, the state will experience serious growth and development. It will also address the issues of unemployment and other challenges” he said.

The consultant also advised the state government to rejig it’s curriculum by including vocational trainings as an integral component of learning.

Capitalpost reports that the meeting whose objective is to give stakeholders an overview of the employment and labour market analysis of the state, had government agencies, ministries and department, teachers in vocational schools, among others as participants.
