Breaking: Senate transfers electronic transmission of results to NCC

Nigeria Senate in bizzare moves transferred the power to transmit election results to the National Communications Commission (NCC).

In the amendment report which was submitted to the Senate on Wednesday by Senator Kabir Gaya, Senate Committee Chairman has recommended that the Independent National Electoral Commission should henceforth be empowered to transmit results electronically.

The Senate became rowdy at a point when the Section 52(3) that deals with electronic transfer was to be debated when Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi moved for amendment against what was contained in the report.

Sabi’s amendment proposal succinctly put the power of transmission to NCC by saying that the transmission should be subject to adequate network.

He said: “I am Senator Sabi Abdullahi and I want to amend secrion 52(3) that “provided that the Commission may adjudged that the network coverage was adequate enough.

The amendment was seconded by Senator Ali Ndume representing Borno South Senatorial district who said: “I reluctantly second on the ground that there would be network in my District of confirmed by the NCC.

Also, Senator Albert Bassey speaking on Section 52(3) that the Commission may transmit the election results when and where practicable.

At this point, the Senate became rowdy as Senators were divided over support for and against electronic voting.

Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan said if we have our peocess, we shall all have our thanks. No amount of shouting will help us. Senate thereafter went into close door to calm tempers.
