DSS arrest controversial Islamic scholar, Sheikh Gumi
Controversial Islamic scholar and bandits negotiator, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has been arrested on Friday, CAPITAL POST has learnt.
His arrest might not be unconnected with an interview he granted on Arise Television on Wednesday, where he alledged that security agents collaborate with bandits to weaponise them.
The military authority immediately reacted to the claim by Gumi, described utterances as inflammatory and capable of generating chaos.
The military said in a statement that, “It is essential to remind ourselves that this same military, being accused of connivance, are the ones who recently put their lives on the line to rescue abductees of the Government Secondary School, Birnin Yauri from kidnappers,” explained the army.
“While the NA will not attempt to excuse the possibility of black sheep amongst its fold, it must be stated unambiguously that it will not condone any form of sabotage or aiding and assisting the enemy by any personnel.”
The military noted that they have always been observing the rules of engagement and principles of fundamental human rights.
The controversial Islamic cleric had at various times tried to mediate between government and bandits to no avail.
He later accused government of taking sides in the farmers/herders crises that he attributes it to tribal war.
“What you call banditry when you cross to the other side, you find out Nigeria is fighting a tribal war,” he explained.
