Profile of Distinguished Senator Mpigi Barinada, PhD
Distinguished Senator Mpigi Barinada, a through bred native of Ogoniland, was born at Koroma Town in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria to the family of Chief Sir S. N. Mpigi (JP, KSC).
The Senator who has enormous interest in good education and the rich values of his people, immediately after his Primary and Secondary education, also obtained a Higher National Diploma in Business Administration from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, 1984.
In his desire to mentor and educate his generations, he went further to obtain a Post Graduate Diploma in Education and a Masters degree in Educational Management from the University of Port Harcourt in 2002 and 2007 respectively. Senator Mpigi, not yet satisfied with his search for knowledge, went on to obtain his MBA from Rivers State University of Science and Technology in 2008, and also a PHD in Educational Management and Administration from the same Institution in 2012.
The Senator’s working experience spans across the Politics, Public Service Sector and the Petroleum Oil Exploration Services, having worked first as a Secondary School Teacher, and later as Administrative Secretary of Benue Chambers of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture, Markurdi – while serving in the National Youth Corp; and also worked as a Damage/Assessment Manager for CGG Nigeria Limited (a Seismic Company operating with Shell Oil Petroleum Plc in the Niger Delta Region.
As an enlightened political and social advocate, Senator Mpigi has also been an active participant in the politics of Rivers State, especially in the search to enthrone justice to the people of Ogoniland, and the salvaging of their ecological environment ravaged by the despoliation and exploitation of oil resources.
He was first elected into the Rivers State House of Assembly in 1998 which was truncated and aborted by the Military intervention under General Sani Abacha. He later served as a Commissioner of Youth Affairs in Rivers State under Dr Governor Peter Odili, during when he showed extraordinary talents and ingenuity as a leader and peace advocate that lead to the restoration of peace in the crisis torn Niger Delta Region though the inauguration of the Amnesty Programme and the exchange of militants’ weapons of war to give peace a chance in the Niger Delta
Senator Mpigi has also served as a two term Executive Chairman of Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State; and also a two term Member of the House of Representatives for Eleme/Oyigbo/Tai Federal Constituency – where he served as the Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters and piloted many important projects to serve the constituency.
Today, he sits at the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as Senator representing the Rivers South East Senatorial District.
Senator Mpigi Barinada is an astute and deeply concerned progressive politician, a man of the people and a leader to be watched. He is a Christian of the Anglican Communion and happily married to his beautiful wife, Mrs Patricia Obiageri Mpigi, and they are blessed with children.
