Suspension of Twitter in Nigeria is suppression of freedom of speech – UK government

The United Kingdom (UK) has reacted to the indefinite suspension of Twitter by President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

Reacting through its High Commissioner in Nigeria, Gill Atkinson on Friday, the UK kicked against the FG’s action, saying, it amount to suppression of freedom of speech of Nigerians.

The High Commissioner said: “Nigerians have right to freedom of speech and the government must not suppress it.

“All Nigerians have the right to freedom of speech and the responsibility not to misuse that right.

“Any action taken by Government must be measured, proportionate and not to suppress basic freedoms.”

CAPITAL POST earlier reported that President Buhari has ordered the immediate suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria.

In a statement by the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, the Federal Government, claimed that Nigerians were using Twitter to perpetuate activities inimical to the corporate existence of Nigeria.

Checks by CAPITAL POST on Saturday showed that Twitter accounts of followers of the news outlet have been stopped.
