Breaking: Buhari’s government announced suspension of Twitter ‘operations’ in Nigeria

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed on Friday in Abuja announced the suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria till further notice.

In a statement by the Special Assistant on Media, Segun Adeyemi which was made available to journalists, said, the micro-blogging is suspended throughout the territory of Nigeria, but without an effective date.

Change of Name

The suspension might be a ‘fight back’ as Twitter on Tuesday deleted President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet.

Buhari’s post on Twitter which was deleted may have not gone down well by the government of the day.

The President blew hot on thise attacking police stations, prisons and offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission, especially in the South-East, while he warned that they have themselves to blame if they don’t stop.

Buhari had tweeted, “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War.

“Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”

There tweet was widely reacted to in an extent that it was unfortunate for the President to recall the sad memory of Nigeria’s civil war between 1967 and 1970. A development considered a violation of Twittwr users policy, saying: “This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules”.

Lai Mohammed accused Twitter of supporting insurrection in Nigeria since October, 2020 in the heat of #EndSARs turned calamity against private individuals and government.

Mohammed’s statement reads: “The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

“The Minister said the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.”
