Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State said the Registrar/CEO of the National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof. Godswill Obioma was assassinated.

Ortom gave his position amid conflicting reports of Obioma’s death last Sunday where his wife claimed that he was killed, while official statement which was signed by NECO’s Director of Human Resources and his first son said he died after a brief illness.

Ortom urged the Federal Government to conduct an autopsy of the late academician.

Obioma was once a resident Commissioner at the Independent National Electoral in Ebonyi, while he was serving his second term of office amid stiff opposition.

He was reacting to the assasination of retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Christopher Dega, his Senior Special Assistant on Security when he made Obioma’s statement.

“Then Professor Obioma, can you imagine? A whole Professor just killed in that manner. Look at what is happening.”

He said President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration has failed woefully.

“It is unfortunate, these killings are unwarranted. If (only) the government were ready to listen to superior ideas, advice, and be proactive.

Ortom admitted being part of failure as long as he is part of government saying “they have equally failed.

“The primary responsibility of any government is to provide security for lives and property.

“If there is no security, nothing meaningful can thrive. There can be no development.

“Nobody will create industries or bring investment to Nigeria. No economic activities can go on, everybody will be afraid”, Ortom said.
