The Acting Inspector General of Police, (IGP), Usman Alkali has revealed that armed men who attempted to attack the governor of Benue State, Mr. Samuel Ortom have been arrested and are awaiting prosecution.

He said the investigation was still ongoing.

IGP said, those arrested were 10 in number who attempted to assassinate the governor.

He spoke to newsmen at the presidential villa, Abuja on Thursday.

“Those who organised and those who pulled the trigger have all been arrested and investigation is ongoing.

“Those who organised and those who pulled the trigger have all been arrested and investigation is ongoing,” he said.

The police Chief however said, investigations has so far revealed governor Ortom’s claims.

In March, 2021, Ortom was attacked by gunmen he believed were fulani herders while on his farm near Tyo-mu, along Makurdi-Gboko Highway of Benue State.

Speaking on the fate of the suspects, the IGP noted that they are being detained because the judiciary staff under the umbrella of Jusun have been on strike.

“We have had them for over a month but the courts have been closed for over three months, where do I take them to?”

The attack on Benue State governor is one too many of attacks going on in the State, the latest of which the governor insisted that citizens should defend themselves.
