Senate Constitution Review: Women group advocates creation of additional 37 female Senate seats

Women Group known as Women Political Participation Technical working group which has the responsibility to enhance the participation of women in the governance in Nigeria has advocated the additional creation of 37 seats in the Senate specially for women.

The group who submitted a memorandum to the Senate Committee for the review of the 1999 Constitution at the North Central Public Hearing in Jos support the proposed amendment of the constitution and advocate creation of additional seat each from 36 states including the Federal Capital.

Change of Name

Spokesperson of the group, Mrs Jiritmwa Morgak Goyit while Speaking to Journalists in Jos on Thursday said the section 48 of the Principal act be altered by substituting the existing section with a new section 48 with additional senator from each state and FCT who shall be a woman.

She said the women are advocating for additional 37 seats specially for women and bring the total number of senators to 146 instead of 109.

“We today submitted a memorandum for the senate to amend and Create additional special seats for women in the Federal and state Legislative Houses; in the senate, one seat for a woman from the 36 states and the Federal Capital, while in the House of Representatives; two seats for women from the 36 states and the Federal Capital and in the states House of Assembly, one seat from each of the three Senatorial Districts in the state”.

Goyit added that for the senate to achieve the creation section 48 of the principal act be altered by substituting the existing the section with a new section.

The group noted that necessary positive measures towards effective amendment of the 1999 Constitution will enhance inclusive governance that Nigerians are earnestly yearning for.
