Yoruba Socio-cultural group tackles Tinubu, others for not supporting agitation to split Nigeria
A Socio-cultural group, ‘Ilana Omo Oodua’, has berated the National leaderbof the ruling All Provressives Congress, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other South West leaders for kicking against agitation to split Nigeria.
Agitations for dismemberment of the nation has been intensified lately with the popular Yoruba youth activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho, championing it.
The group was reacting to the outcome of Sunday’s meeting of Yoruba leaders in Lagos with Tinubu, the former Interim National Chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande, House Speaker, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila in attendance.
In a communique issued to journalists at the end of the meeting in Lagos, the Southwest leaders opposed secession, but threw their weight behind ban on open grazing which penultimate week was decided by the Southern governors.
But on Monday, spokesperson of the group, Maxwell Adeleye, described the APC leaders’ decision as unfortunate, clarifying that the group is for self-determination, not secession.
The group headed by Prof Banji Akintoye also said to the APC leaders that “history will not be kind to them” for “opposing the wish of the people”.
“People need to correct this. It is not secession. What we are fighting for is the self-determination right of our people as guaranteed by the United Nations Charter on Human rights and even the 1999 constitution.
“It is our right to fight for self-determination. Tinubu and others are entitled to their opinions. Conduct a poll and you will see that a majority of Yoruba people want their own nation.
“It is unfortunate that Chief Bisi Akande is present where the yearning and aspirations of Yoruba people will be denied. If his mentor, the late Chief Bola Ige – is alive, will Bisi Akande say the things he read out yesterday?
“If the likes of Tinubu, Baba Akande because of their ambition, Baba Akande are not careful, history will not be kind to them for standing against the yearnings and aspirations of the people. Without the people, they cannot be leaders,” he said.
Meanwhile, earlier on Monday, Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege at a press conference in assured that the amendment to 1999 Constitution would be passed into law in July, 2021.
He also announced that public hearing on memoranda submitted few months ago will take place at the various six geopolitical zones on Wednesday and Thursday this week.
